A Venezolana McDonnell Douglas MD-83, registration YV191T performing flight VNE-242 from Maracaibo to Porlamar (Venezuela) with 142 people on board, was climbing out of Maracaibo when the aircraft flew through a flock of birds and the left hand engine (JT8D) ingested at least one bird, emitted bangs and streaks of flames prompting the crew to shut the engine down and return to Maracaibo for a safe landing.
