A Lufthansa Airbus A340-300, registration D-AIFF performing flight LH-773 from Bangkok (Thailand) to Frankfurt/Main (Germany), was enroute at FL320 about 90nm west of Lahore (Pakistan) when the crew descended the aircraft to FL300. The aircraft continued the flight and was enroute at FL300 about 120nm eastnortheast of Athens (Greece), still in Turkish Airspace near Izmir, when the crew began the descent towards Athens advising of an engine (CFM56) problem. The aircraft landed safely on Athen's runway 21L.

A replacement Airbus A340-300 registration D-AIFA had already been dispatched from Frankfurt to Athens as flight LH-773T and continued the flight about 100 minutes after landing of D-AIFF delivering the passengers to Frankfurt with a delay of 3:15 hours.

The occurrence aircraft was able to position at FL380 to Frankfurt as flight LH-9925 the following day after about 24 hours on the ground in Athens, but has not yet resumed service about 54 hours after landing in Athens.
