An American Airlines Boeing 767-300, registration N391AA performing flight AA-992 from Belo Horizonte,MG (Brazil) to Miami,FL (USA) with 167 passengers and 12 crew, was climbing out of Belo Horizonte's runway 34 when an engine (CF6) emitted a loud bang and streaks of flames prompting the crew to level off at 7000 feet, shut the engine down and return to Belo Horizonte for a safe landing on runway 16 about 25 minutes after departure.

The airline confirmed a mechanical problem. The flight was cancelled, the passengers were rebooked onto the next flight the following day.
